University of Maryland, College Park - Senior Director of Development for University Initiatives

The Senior Director of Development is responsible for developing strategies and leading fundraising activities for university-wide initiatives resulting out of the Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland, and eventually beyond the close of the campaign. Initially, the Senior Director is expected to assist with the design and execution of fundraising campaigns for special Campaign projects which have a University-wide focus, including The Flagship Promise (undergraduate need-based scholarship program) and any fundraising initiatives arising from the partnership with The Phillips Collection. He/she will coordinate with campus schools/colleges, the Regional team and central units. The Senior Director will also be expected to manage a portfolio for such projects and to successfully cultivate and secure six and seven figure gifts.

Job Description

Essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Responsible for fundraising success for key university initiatives identified as part of the Fearless Ideas campaign
  • Manage a portfolio of 75 major gift level prospects, developing cultivation strategies, proposals and working with donors in the execution of six- and seven-figure gifts for the initiatives
  • Lead and manage the creation and implementation of Fearless Initiatives projects and coordinate prospect strategy meetings; serve as a liaison to and interact regularly with other campus divisions, offices and leaders in the planning and execution of university-wide fundraising campaigns for Fearless initiatives
  • Engage donors and volunteers who can assist with strategies and solicitations
  • Lead efforts to develop visibility and momentum for these initiatives with development staff, Deans, institutional leaders and campaign volunteers
  • Serve as interim consulting senior development officer for Deans in the event of a vacancy at the Senior Development Officer position
  • Provide regular on-site strategic guidance for school/unit development staff, work closely with Dean to maintain donor and campaign momentum, staff dean on development calls with key prospects as appropriate
  • Serve as a liaison with the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) to ensure the Flagship Promise program is operationalized efficiently and in accordance with the long-term goals of OSFA and UR
  • Maintain tracking system for assigned projects and ensure all recordkeeping systems are up to date within Advance and other reporting systems


Minimum qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of seven years of experience working in development, preferably in a research university environment, is required
  • Successful candidates will have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a front-line major gift officer with a strong track record of closing six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Candidates must have proven success starting and managing innovative programs, projects or initiatives, and proven ability to work with volunteers and/or major donors
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills are essential to this position, as is the ability to manage, execute, and work collaboratively to complete complex tasks and to oversee large projects
