Summary

The Executive Director of Development will serve as the number 2 in the office in terms of fundraising and will work closely with the Assistant Dean, the Dean, key faculty, and volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts at the $100,000 level and above. In addition to working with individual prospects, the Director will also supervise the front-line fundraising team and manage the prospect pool for the entire team. The Director will monitor and report on fundraising trends in business schools including Big 10 and nationally ranked b-schools. Additionally, the Director will serve as a key resource in during the campaign by assisting in the management of volunteers and the solicitation of campaign prospects.

Job Description

 Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Dean, Chairs, and faculty and staff in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects with a focus on prospects rated above $100,000 plus range
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-125 prospects
  • Manage two to four front line fundraisers and manage the Smith prospect pool among those development officers
  • Serve as a leader among the Smith School Office of Development and Alumni Relations and work to advance the mission and goals of the school

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Master's degree preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of ten years of experience in the field of development and fundraising or marketing/sales with a minimum of five years in development experience at a major gifts level
  • The Executive Director must be a highly energetic professional with a proven track record of building relationships and closing gifts above $100,000
  • Candidates must have strong leadership ability, experience managing a staff, and the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with other fundraising professionals and campus leaders
  • Successful candidates will have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as the position involves sharing the vision of the Business School with alumni and other supporters
  • The ability to juggle multiple priorities and work independently, while also maneuvering as a prominent and enthusiastic member of the college’s development team is essential
  • Candidates should have knowledge of and enthusiasm for the University of Maryland and business schools
  • Background in higher education, particularly at a business school, is desirable, as is experience with BSR Advance and/or Sales Force
  • This position requires travel 50% of the time
